so this place has been pretty dead for the past decade... a lot has happened in the meantime. Question - does anyone still use FM? Wondering if it makes sense to finish up a few things and clean it up. I've switched to a mac about 10 years ago, so can't even say if it's working on modern windows systems. Anybody care to share thoughts?

cheers

One day I got an email from one of the users that was something like this: "check this out, looks just like FM". So I did check it out and I found that it was reskinned with some shitty library, authors (me & David) were removed, GPL License was removed and the guy was taking donations for this. But that wasn't enough... so I've started searching for this "Cyber Bandwith Monitor" and I've found two things:

1. almost every major software-download-website was hosting it
2. it was diagnosed on some websites that it contains malware

So I was pissed like hell... some shithead took our work and thought "Hey, let's make a profit out of someone elses work!". So I wasted 3 days just trying to put his website down and take all that apps down. The response was really poor... At that time his hosing provider was go daddy and they were very professional in taking it down in a matter of minutes, so the guy changed his provider and the next one replied to my mails: "So what?". So I've started looking for help and I've described everything and posted it to GPL Violations and all I got from them was: "We can tell you how you can sue him". So all I had was his whois from domain name:

Since I don't have the time, money and he is in Israel and I'm in Poland I just taken the project down from SF. I left the version that was there just beacause I felt that if I published something it's no use to take it down since the damage was already done... I had a chat with Rick Brewster (the Paint.NET guy) since he had the same problems as I did and what he said is that without lawyers you can't do shit and since lawyers cost a lot of money... Rick had similar problems but had much more luck in taking down the sites - probably due to popularity of Paint.NET.

Since then everytime somebody says "OpenSource is great!" I ask him: "Are you a developer?" if the answer is "yes" then I ask them "Have you created any OS project that is used by anyone?" in 99% cases the answer is "no" and then I say: "Then fuck you".

Thanks for the emails - I've got a long list of testers and for now it will suffice, so please don't send me emails. For those that I've replied - you are testers for FM. Everyone - plase be patient, I didn't forget about FM, I just need to address things that are more important for me at this time (things that will earn me money). When I'll be ready to work on FM again I'll let everyone know.

I've recieved many emails on FM crashing and misbehaving. So I've dropped the 2.0 for now and focused on making FM 1.* stable so that everybody can wait for 2.0 without pulling their hair out.

bugfix - settings not saved

bugfix - crash when hidden FM and closed

bugfix - update showing misleading information

new - double click the graph to open totals log

new - exclude hours in totals log

new - show/hide exclusion in totals log

sorry to keep you waiting for the FM 2.0 but I had (and got) lots of things to do... including my second child being born (boy) and my wife's mom death... besides that I was really into releasing Proto 0.6.8 and doing all other things... anyway I'm now slowly going back to FreeMeter 2.0 :) As you can see I had to move FM site to miechu.pl since assembla.com moved to paid service... So I've moved everything including comments :)

Also I've created a a UserVoice.com forumboard to get the info about what features you want - go here and share your ideas with me :)

Feature set for FM 2.0

Hi everyone, in the meantime between today and the release of FreeMeter 2.0 (that I estimate for X-mas, since I don’t have that much time to spend on FM) I’d like to gather feedback and feature set for 2.0 and future versions. This is a list of things that I know for sure that I’ll be implementing:

Rewrite will be done in c# & .net framework 3.5 sp1 – many people ask me why is this so? The simplest answer is that I also want to have some features while I’m coding this thing :P A more reasonable arguments state that 3.5 sp1 gives me Linq, WPF and a faster and more secure framework.

I’ll totally redesign interface as for now it really, really sucks…

There will be massive change to alerts as for today these are too simple and in many situations that won’t do.

I will give you new tray icon graph that and a plugin based architecture so that new graphs for the tray and main window can be created.

I’m considering WPF in 2.0 but I’m not sure if I want that in 2.0 since I’m all new to WPF, but if not in 2.0 then 2.x I will move FM to WPF.

There will be finally weekly logs and alerts.

Customization of graphs colors.

Multilingual interface.

Enhanced utilities – ping, trace, mail, totals log.

Auto-update feature.

Totals log split to interfaces (not sure if this is possible but I’ll try).

Total-hiper-giga-full bug fixing.

Some real documentation and maybe tutorials.

A brand new website! :)

A helper info for those that can’t seem to get FM to work.

And the following features are based on requests from users that I’ve approved:

Multiple instances will be allowed.

Hiding while alt+tab is pressed.

Manipulation of the time scale (via resizing window + via settings).

Remembering selected interfaces between restarts.

Off-screen control (so window won’t go off screen).

Archive bandwidth graph with the data – on demand.

System startup integration.

I think that this is it – if I missed anything or you want to comment on any of those – please do! I”m looking forward to your feedback!

FreeMeter @ assembla

This will be FreeMeter's new home (speaking about assembla here)... I'm very dissapointed in how sourceforge handles things so I'll be moving all development here. The repository @ sf is no longer up to date and there have been some issues with stealing FM code... So I'll have to address that... In the meanwhile I'm rewriting fm... It was so poorly written I couldn't manage it anymore...
